What is Single Vehicle Taxi Insurance?

Whether you operate a public hire or a private hire taxi, Gallagher can offer single vehicle taxi insurance to help keep your vehicle on the road and help protect you against claims from members of the public with liability insurance too.

If you operate a single vehicle taxi then we can help. If you operate more than one, we can offer taxi fleet insurance, while if you have a base for your taxi fleet then you may also require taxi base insurance. Regardless if you’re an individual taxi driver or run your own company, we can provide hire and reward insurance cover for your individual needs.

Our taxi insurance is offered on a third party, third party fire and theft or comprehensive basis.

We know that your vehicle provides your livelihood, so we aim to offer an appropriate single vehicle taxi insurance from our panel of insurers.

What is the difference between a public hire taxi and a private hire taxi?

Simply put, a public hire taxi is available without being pre-booked (hence it can be hailed by any member of the public). Black cabs (or Hackney carriages) are the most famous example of this type of vehicle, although other vehicles displaying a Taxi light on the roof can also be hired.

Taxis like these often wait on ranks at railway stations, airports and at busy city locations.

Private hire taxis, in contrast, must be hired in advance.  This includes taxis from traditional cab firms, as well as those using Uber and other apps.  Gallagher can help individual private hire taxi drivers to stay legal with the appropriate insurance for their needs, and we can also cover taxi bases for buildings and specified contents.

Whether you’re a public or private hire taxi driver, your local authority will issue you with a licence (or badge) to carry out your work.

Why do I need public liability insurance as a taxi driver?

While it is not a legal requirement to take out public liability insurance, as a taxi driver, it really is a must to consider. When you are working with members of the public all the time, there is always a chance they might be injured or suffer damage to their property – and if anything does go wrong, a claim could be made.
