Mechanic takes Santa's sleigh on the road

An award-winning Scottish mechanic has converted a car into a special Santa’s sleigh, which he is using to raise cash for charities during the festive period and spread a little Christmas cheer.

Ian Robertson, who runs The Garage in Whitburn, West Lothian, is taking the ‘sleigh’ to Christmas parties, schools, nurseries and old people’s homes around the county in return for donations to Disability West Lothian. The business has a Facebook page, where local people can check to see when the motorised sleigh will be visiting their area.

Whether you have a souped-up sleigh or just ordinary cars on your premises and are taking them out on the road, it’s important to have an up to date road risks insurance policy.

Mr Robertson told the Daily Record: “We plan for the sleigh to be active everyday … covering Whitburn and neighbouring places.

“We will inform everyone about the where and when on the Facebook page first, and are working on you being able to access information on the Sleigh location live so you can digitally follow the sleigh’s whereabouts.”

The fun fundraising scheme is one of the reasons The Garage has just scooped an award from the Scottish Motor Trade Association. It won the Community Garage 2015 title in the association’s annual CAR (Community Activity Recognition) awards.

Mr Robertson said: “It’s the kind of thing we do and we’re looking forward to getting the sleigh out and about.”
