Police say shop fire was started deliberately

Police say a fire that destroyed a health supplements store in Scotland was started deliberately.

Muscle Junction in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, lost its complete shop front in an explosion which started the blaze. No one was in the shop at the time, which was targeted late on Saturday night.

Shop fires are fortunately rare occurrences, and ones that are started deliberately are rarer still, but it is important to ensure your premises are properly insured in case the worst happens. General business insurance as well as shop insurance tailored to your business are key. You may also want to consider a business interruption insurance policy in case you have to stop trading for a period due to unforeseen circumstances.

Police Scotland and firefighters are jointly investigating the attack at Muscle Junction. Officers are viewing CCTV from the street and appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious before the explosion to get in touch.

Det Con Mark Hendry told the BBC: "It's important we establish why this property was targeted and trace whoever is responsible.

"I am appealing for anyone who may have seen someone in the area or near to the premises who was perhaps acting a little suspiciously.

"If you have any information, no matter how insignificant it seems to you, please do pass it on."

Business owner Derek Kirkwood used social media to tell customers that the business would continue as usual. He said that Muscle Junction 2 would open soon.

He added: “And for any muppets that think it’s insurance related, wind your neck back in.”

Fire crews quickly had the blaze under control, but roads around the ship had to be closed while the incident was dealt with.
